One of my favorite works of art is “The Tortoise Trainer." Osman Bey satirizes the slow and ineffective attempts at reforming the Ottoman Empire through the attempts of the scholar to train tortoises. The painting depicts an elderly man in a traditional Ottoman religious costume in the mid-19th century. He holds a traditional flute with which he is attempting to "train" the tortoises at his feet. The Quilt is based on Bey's work.
